Electric Dryer

Electric Dryers are usually cheaper than gas and easier to install.

How Do Electric Dryers Work?

dryer.jpg
Electric dryers come in a wide range of models with relatively low upfront costs. They are relatively low-maintenance and have budget friendly repair costs.  Installation is as easy as plugging it in! However, most models require a 240-volt outlet, which is more powerful than a standard outlet.  Many laundry rooms already have one available, but for others a new outlet will need to be installed.

You can also get a heat pump dryer, also called a condensing dryer.  Like other types of heat pumps, these dryers transfer heat from the surrounding air, rather than producing it.  This makes heat pump dryers 40-50% more efficient than standard electric models.

Costs

Electric Dryers are a great place to start with electrification.  They’re easy to install and most are cheaper than gas dryers.  Although they will increase your energy bill.

Equipment Cost

Electric dryers cost about $800 on average, which is around $50-100 cheaper than a gas dryer.  Heat pump dryers are more expensive, averaging around $1300.

Electric dryers also require a 240-volt outlet. Many laundry rooms already have one, however, you may need to have one installed.  The cost to install a 240V outlet can vary widely based on the layout of your home and electrical system.  Speak with an electrician to learn more.

Energy Bill Costs

Electricity costs more than gas, so electric dryers will increase your energy bill by around $100 per year on average.  Consider lowering your electricity costs with solar panels!

You do not need a permit to install a dryer.  However, if you need to install a 240-volt outlet that will require a permit.  To receive your permit, fill out this application and email it to permits@albanyca.org.  This is an over-the-counter permit that is typically issued within 1-2 business days.
